Wala ^^
Does the "new" nectarine have to be written in PHP?
IMHO there are better alternatives like Django, TurboGears, Pylons or Ruby on Rails. I'd love to help coding, but not if it's PHP - I find it hard to program clean and secure code in it. And regarding the whole reason for the rewrite, PHP is a bad choice
(Of course, if the hoster only allows/supports PHP, so be it.)
My primary skill is with MySql.
I admin a big mysql datawarehouse (>3TB).
Otherwise:
Perl
C/C++
Javascript
AJAX (not perfect, but makes it work)
Less confident with CSS and PHP
Have to agree with Joghurt's comment. Especially since I already have some basic code already running, using Django ;)

You compare native php to other languages frameworks, it's not "fair". So maybe you should compare Symfony, Zend Framework, CodeIgniter, or any php framework to RoR, Django and so on. The problem is not the language in itself, but the coder who uses this language...
This is so annoying to hear those biased comparisons each time we are speaking about web languages. The security is not the language problem, it's the coder problems. This is not because you 'can' use the word 'fuck' in english, that you 'must' use this word; Same goes for programming languages.
The choice as to be made for the scability, the coders experience, maintenance and so on. As it will be served by a dedicated webserver, any language should be use...
Good luck with the project !
Would like to provide a native iPhoneOS application for interacting with the new Nectarine Engine. I am an official registered SDK developer. Please feel free to contact me.
When it comes to planing a new engine, it would be cool to implement or at least think about XML RPCs to interact with the engine from the outside, for example to provide functions for stream URL selection, voting, searching the database, adding tracks to the playlists etc. This would also be cool for other frontends on KDE, the Windows tray and what not or just Perl. The above mentioned could then be wrapped into HTTPS to submit information for auth and so on securely.
Anyways, this is far to early to discuss, but some ideas I have. Maybe some kind of a Wiki would be good for coworking and a channel for all developers - and a mailinglist. With the last topic (mailing/distribution list) I can help out, too.
Just let me know. I am looking forward to productive working on this new now more open project. Thanks to Yes to not give up completely, allthough I can understand, that it was a hard hit. But now lets think about the future and create!

If the new Nectarine will end up running Apache HTTP server then I can recommend ModSecurity, especially when using PHP and MySQL, saved my ass many times (at www.eurasia.nu).
http://www.modsecurity.org/projects...
In short it sits as a filter for all data going in/out from Apache and can trigger via rules. This gives the means to block attacks fast, and later figure out what was wrong in the code (eg. PHP). You can even set this up in conjunction with iptables to block dos attacks.
If you need any help setting it up I'd be happy to help out.
I've been a fan of Nectarine for several years and are proudly supporting it by banner/link from my site.

@Spekul,Yes
I have some experience in XML/SOAP, but it is perhaps a bit early. At first, we should simply make sure to create a nice API for the nectarine database functionality.
We can then decide later how to expose them as a SOA.
Thanks modrobert ! I added it in TO LIST.
Spekul, where can i contact you ?
Same for BombmanDK, used your email on your website, but it doesn't work :(
Where can i contact you ?
Yes, I sent you an email to the address you provided via PayPal. My address is the same one I used to submit a comment here.
Heh, you've forgot to mention a software engineer to manage the project and the team :)
anyway, good luck!
I can help...
I have some free bandwidth to re-streaming :)
Hey guys,
im from germany and I'm a IMHO good programmer in PHP and MySQL stuff (supporting 1 bigger and 1 small project)!
If you need help i would appreciate it beeing one of you helping to make the NEW nectarine more safe and better than ever!
Just drop me a message!
greetings
chris
I do development in php, javascript and mysql for a living. Would love to help. I do know java but have never tinkered with a mobile platform so php might be my best contribution (on the other hand it is always fun to learn new stuff :p)
Could potentially offer a host for some development facilities (like those spekul mentioned).
i can help with servers, encoding and security if you need. just drop a line.
I'm a web developer with PHP/MySQL/Ruby on Rails experience, I'd love to help in any way I can.
hey guys,
so i recently published an iPhoneOS web radio client on the app store... (http://tinyurl.com/welovehouse)
all sources + rights remain with me, and i do happen to have a bit of free time on my hands. i could create a nectarine/scenemusic branded client and point it to your streams. could be either a free app or EUR 0.99 with all the money going towards your hosting/hardware costs.
please contact me via mail (folkert AT-AT feedface.com) in case you're interested.
cheers,
folkert
